The Japanese invented traditional Shoji room divider and door pieces to help split an indoor space without having to build immobile walls. Characterized by the clean squares that the thin wood slats make, the Shoji divider doors are designed to slide open left to right, and quickly create rooms or private spaces as needed. They exemplify the Japanese aesthetics of clean, simple elegance straight from the classical Japanese style of older times.

Today, most Shoji dividers and doors are not made of the old paper and wood frames like they once were. Most of such doors today do not use the traditional washi paper. Instead, modern manufacturers can use paper of more common modern production processes, or use plastic as the sheets that fill out the door’s grid design.
